Overwatch – A Clash of Heroes

The beta is over, for good this time. Overwatch is already a huge success for Blizzard, and it’s the first new IP (I don’t count Hearthstone) for a very, very long time. We already know it has an amazing art style, superbly designed and diverse characters, and a great cinematic team creating lore for the game. Why is everyone hooked though?

World of WarCraft – My Week in Draenor

I’ve been a player of World of Warcraft since the early days. I played every expansion pack, even raided during Wrath of the Lich King and reviewed Cataclysm when it dropped. Cataclysm was when I stopped playing regularly. I started with friends at University in my first couple of years, switching to a different server and to Alliance (For the Horde!) for them. We got too busy and I just stopped. Then, before Warlords of Draenor hit, I decided to get into Mists of Pandaria when it was on sale. I played for a few weeks, didn’t finish the content and then stopped completely for about the 5th time. Then, last week, Blizzard sent my an email. They had upgraded my account to the newest expansion, and offered a free week of game time. It was hard to resist.

Gears of War 4 Multiplayer Beta – First Impressions

Gears of War 4, now headed by The Coalition rather than Epic Games, is coming soon, and it’s Multiplayer Beta has just opened up for everyone. You get the chance to play 3 new maps, a new game-mode (Dubbed Dodgeball) and good ol’ Team Deathmatch. But has anything really changed or improved for the next in the franchise?

DOOM Multiplayer Beta – First Impressions

Soon, it will be upon us. The next eagerly awaited installed of the grandaddy of FPS games, DOOM. The fourth main game in the franchise, it’s aiming to get back to it’s fast paced and hectic roots. We get a little taste of what’s to come in the multiplayer beta, with a couple of weapons and gamemodes to try. I’m going to talk about my time with the PC and Xbox One versions of this beta.

Halo 5 Warzone Firefight – First Impressions of the Beta

I’ve managed to sneak in a few games of Warzone Firefight, the  new co-operative mode added into Halo 5 and revival of the Firefight game mode from ODST originally, and Reach most recently. The mode is currently in a Beta state, with only one of the Warzone maps playable, but it has the entire five rounds for you to play with up to 8 people. Between servers being overwhelmed and Xbox Live having some issues, it was tough to find a game, but after 4 games I’m already excited to see the mode come out of Beta later this year.

Are Shooters Stagnant?

Gamers like shooting things in the face. Army men, aliens, criminals, hell anything that breathes. It’s satisfying to vent your frustrations by emptying countless numbers of bullets into something that’s trying to kill you right back. There’s been changes from these games over the years. Even looking through the history of the grand-daddy of them all, Wolfenstein, you can see a vast difference. Not to mention over the shoulder camera angles, authentic shooters like Battlefield, realistic shooters like ArmA and even shooters with RPG elements like the recently released The Division. But what’s next? Is there any innovation left in something so simple as see man, shoot gun?

The Bizarre Feeling of the Steam Community Market

A lot of people know the insanity of prices of Skins for Counter Strike: Global Offensive. For paying a couple of pounds you get a chance at a unique skin for your gun to make it look a bit prettier when you’re playing. The rarest of these, Knife varients and paintjobs, can go for upwards of £300. It can get pretty insane.  (more…)

Living the Farming Life with Stardew Valley

It’s been at least a decade, possibly more, since I last played a Harvest Moon game that my sister owned. I can’t remember the exact game it was, nor the console it was on, but I recall it being pretty fun for what it was. I struggled with it, and only played it now and then, but it was enjoyable. I then started hearing about Stardew Valley, a “Harvest Moon Clone” that was on PC. It wasn’t expensive, so I dived in to see what it was like. Eight hours of play time later, and I had to jump off so my girlfriend could have a shot for herself.

The Difficulty with Difficulty

There’s been two games that I’ve sunk my time into recently. One new, and one that I went back to. XCOM 2 and Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin. Both of these are well known franchises for being difficult, but the difficulty from both comes from different things.

Difficult games are also not for everyone, as rewarding as it can be for the player. So what’s so difficult about games that try and fail to make a hard game, and instead make something frustrating? Or is that a problem that is completely subjective to the player?

Welcome to Sitoxic Gaming!

Hey there, everybody!

Sitoxic Gaming is a blog I’ve been working on for the past few months. Here, I’ll be writing about video games on my own time, for my own benefit. This will still include the occasional reviews, previews and such, but will mostly focus on my own opinion of things going on in the gaming world. (more…)
